What's happening

This bill extends the expiration date of foster family care demonstration programs in New York from 2017 to 2021.

Why it matters

  1. Allows continued innovation and evaluation. By extending the demonstration programs, New York can keep testing and improving alternative foster care models, potentially leading to better outcomes for children and families.

  2. Prevents disruption for current participants. Without this extension, children and foster families already involved in these demonstration programs might face sudden transitions or loss of services, risking instability.

  3. Signals ongoing state investment in foster care reform. The extension reflects New York’s commitment to exploring new approaches in child welfare, which may inform future statewide policy changes or permanent programs.
