What's happening

This bill extends the Department of Environmental Conservation's authority to manage Atlantic cod in New York until 2020.

Why it matters

  1. Continued local management. By extending the Department of Environmental Conservation’s authority over Atlantic cod, the bill allows New York to maintain direct oversight of this important fishery, rather than defaulting to federal rules, which may not consider local ecological or economic conditions.

  2. Fisheries conservation and sustainability. Ongoing state management can help ensure that Atlantic cod stocks are protected and managed for long-term sustainability, which is crucial for commercial and recreational fishers, as well as marine ecosystems.

  3. Economic and community impacts. The extension provides stability for fishing communities and seafood businesses that rely on predictable local regulations, potentially supporting local jobs and economies during a period of uncertain fish populations.
