What's happening

This bill extends the Department of Environmental Conservation's authority to manage Atlantic herring in New York until 2020.

Why it matters

  1. Continued Conservation Efforts. Extending the Department of Environmental Conservation's authority allows for ongoing management of Atlantic herring, which is critical for protecting the species from overfishing and ensuring the health of marine ecosystems.

  2. Support for Local Fisheries. The extension provides regulatory stability for commercial and recreational fisheries that depend on Atlantic herring, helping to balance economic interests with sustainability concerns.

  3. Alignment with Regional Management. By maintaining state-level management authority, New York can better coordinate with regional fishery management plans and adapt to changes in Atlantic herring populations or federal guidelines.

  4. Prevention of Regulatory Gaps. Without this extension, there could be a lapse in management, potentially leading to unregulated harvesting and negative impacts on both the fish population and related industries.
