What's happening

This bill extends the Department of Environmental Conservation's authority to manage blueback herring in New York through 2020.

Why it matters

  1. Continued oversight of blueback herring populations helps protect a species that has experienced significant declines, supporting both ecological stability and biodiversity in New York’s waterways.

  2. By extending the Department of Environmental Conservation's management authority, the bill allows for ongoing collection of scientific data, assessment of environmental impacts, and adaptation of conservation strategies as needed.

  3. This extension could help New York align with regional and federal management efforts for blueback herring, which migrate across state boundaries and are subject to broader conservation plans.

  4. Maintaining management authority until 2020 provides time to evaluate the effectiveness of existing regulations and decide on long-term solutions for protecting this important fish species and the ecosystems they support.
