This bill limits charitable bail assistance to first-time offenders charged with misdemeanors during a single incident.
Why it matters
Reduces the scope of charitable bail organizations. by restricting their services to defendants who have never been charged with any crime before, potentially leaving repeat offenders without this support even for minor offenses.
Limits charitable bail to misdemeanors from a single incident. , which may particularly impact individuals facing multiple, unrelated low-level charges or those accused in separate events.
May increase pretrial detention for non-first-time or multi-charge defendants. , as those unable to pay bail themselves and ineligible for charitable assistance could be forced to remain in jail pending trial.
Shifts the focus of charitable bail from general assistance to a more selective, risk-averse approach. , which could reduce the organizations’ ability to address broader systemic inequalities in the bail system.
