What's happening
This bill authorizes the state to sell a specific parcel of land in Huntington, Suffolk County, to the town for fair market value, with conditions to preserve parking and accommodate highway needs.
Why it matters
Ensures continued parking availability. The bill requires that 100% of the existing parking on the parcel be preserved, in consultation with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which protects commuter and local access to public transportation and nearby businesses.
Protects future transportation needs. By reserving parts of the parcel for both current and future highway uses, the legislation guards against losing valuable land needed for infrastructure expansions or improvements.
Includes accountability and timelines. The bill sets a five-year window for the Town of Huntington to apply for and improve the property, and if improvements aren't made within five years, the land reverts to the state—ensuring public resources aren’t left unused or neglected.
Requires precise property documentation. The town must provide an accurate survey and description for state approval before the transfer is finalized, which reduces the risk of disputes or confusion about the land’s exact boundaries and usage.
