What's happening
This bill requires the Department of Environmental Conservation to report on coyote management techniques in New York's urban and suburban areas.
Why it matters
Expands government accountability. By requiring a detailed report, the bill ensures that the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) must publicly explain and justify its coyote management strategies, using the best scientific data available.
Potential for improved public safety and education. The focus on minimizing dangerous interactions and enhancing public engagement could lead to better-informed communities and potentially safer coexistence with urban and suburban coyotes.
Promotes evaluation of humane and effective management options. The bill obliges the DEC to consider a range of coyote population control methods—including non-lethal options like fertility control—possibly influencing future wildlife management toward more humane practices.
Encourages learning from other states. By reviewing effective practices used elsewhere, New York could adopt or adapt successful strategies, potentially leading to better outcomes for both people and wildlife.
