What's happening

This bill requires a temporary 25% discount on Long Island Rail Road weekly and monthly passes during Amtrak construction disruptions.

Why it matters

  1. Provides financial relief to regular LIRR commuters. By mandating a 25% discount on weekly and monthly passes, the bill directly reduces costs for those most affected by prolonged Amtrak-related service disruptions, helping daily riders manage unexpected inconvenience and delays.

  2. Creates accountability for fare adjustments during major disruptions. The legislation ensures that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) must respond to service interruptions not just with apologies or alternative transit options, but with concrete financial compensation for affected riders.

  3. Limits the discount period to the actual disruption timeframe. The discount only applies as long as Amtrak construction is actively disrupting LIRR service, preventing unnecessary loss of fare revenue once normal operations resume and tying relief to real impacts.

  4. Requires official notification and legislative tracking. The bill includes a provision for the MTA chairman to formally notify the legislature when repairs are complete, supporting transparency and accurate public records about when fare relief begins and ends.
