What's happening

This bill extends the expiration date of the New York State Ocean Acidification Task Force from 2019 to 2022.

Why it matters

  1. Allows more time for research and recommendations. By extending the task force’s expiration, this bill enables the group to continue investigating the causes and impacts of ocean acidification in New York’s waters and to develop informed policy recommendations.

  2. Continues stakeholder engagement. The extension means that scientists, policymakers, industry representatives, and community members can keep collaborating on strategies to reduce ocean acidification and protect marine environments.

  3. Addresses ongoing environmental challenges. Ocean acidification is a growing problem linked to climate change and CO₂ emissions. Keeping the task force active ensures New York remains proactive in monitoring, understanding, and responding to these threats to fisheries, coastal economies, and marine biodiversity.
