What's happening
This bill requires all maternal health care providers in New York to screen pregnant women for maternal depression.
Why it matters
Early detection and intervention. Mandatory screenings ensure that maternal depression is identified sooner, allowing mothers to access treatment and support before symptoms escalate, which can improve both maternal and child health outcomes.
Standardized care across providers. By requiring all maternal health care providers to conduct screenings, this bill reduces disparities in care and ensures that all pregnant women, regardless of where they receive care, are assessed for depression.
Potential to reduce long-term health costs. Addressing maternal depression early can help prevent complications such as poor prenatal care, preterm birth, and developmental issues in children, potentially reducing healthcare and social service costs over time.
Supports family stability and child development. Untreated maternal depression can negatively affect bonding, parenting, and children’s emotional development, so routine screening can play a crucial role in supporting healthier families and communities.
