What's happening

This bill adds the Ramapough Lenape Nation to the list of recognized New York State Indian nations and tribes.

Why it matters

  1. Grants the Ramapough Lenape Nation the same legal recognition as other New York State-recognized tribes, which can impact their eligibility for state programs, legal protections, and government-to-government relations.

  2. Enables the Ramapough Lenape Nation to be included in definitions within the state tax law, potentially affecting their eligibility for tax exemptions and regulations that apply to other recognized tribes.

  3. May increase the Ramapough Lenape Nation’s ability to pursue land claims, cultural preservation efforts, and access certain state resources or services reserved for recognized tribes.

  4. Could strengthen the political and social standing of the Ramapough Lenape Nation within New York, supporting their advocacy for rights, sovereignty, and community development.
