What's happening

This bill allows deaf or hard of hearing drivers in New York to drive without a hearing aid if their vehicle has a full view mirror.

Why it matters

  2. Recognizes visual driving adaptations. such as a full view mirror—as effective safety measures, aligning the law with modern assistive technology and best practices for safe driving.

  3. Reduces unnecessary barriers to driving. for people with hearing loss, potentially making it easier for them to obtain and retain driver’s licenses and participate fully in daily life and employment.

  4. Signals a shift toward individualized accommodations. in traffic law, emphasizing that safety can be achieved through multiple means rather than a one-size-fits-all mandate.
