What's happening
This bill requires industrial development agencies to get approval from affected school boards before approving new PILOT (payment in lieu of taxes) agreements.
Why it matters
Gives school boards direct power over PILOT agreements. , meaning local schools can block or negotiate deals that affect their funding, rather than just being informed after the fact.
Could slow down or complicate the approval process for industrial development projects. , since school board approval becomes a new required step, potentially impacting economic development timelines.
Strengthens local educational funding oversight. , ensuring that decisions which may reduce school tax revenues (via PILOTs) can’t be made without the schools' explicit consent.
Promotes greater transparency and accountability. , as school boards must be formally consulted and must publicly approve deals that impact their district’s finances.
