What's happening

This bill directs the New York State Department of Health to study and address high asthma rates in Brooklyn, identifying causes and proposing solutions.

Why it matters

  1. Targets health disparities. By requiring analysis of asthma rates in relation to income, race, ethnicity, and housing type, the bill aims to uncover and address environmental justice and health equity issues specific to Brooklyn.

  2. Focuses on environmental contributors. The mandate to assess proximity to major air pollution sources (like busy roadways and waste facilities) could identify actionable links between local environmental factors and asthma rates, potentially driving broader anti-pollution efforts.

  3. Evaluates healthcare effectiveness. By including an evaluation of existing medical facilities’ effectiveness, the bill could identify gaps in care or resources, leading to stronger community health infrastructure and targeted interventions for vulnerable populations.

  4. Sets a clear timeline for action. The bill’s requirements for completion of the study and delivery of a remedial plan within strict deadlines create accountability and urgency, increasing the likelihood of timely improvements in public health outcomes.
