What's happening

This bill requires all unattended charitable collection containers in New York to display the percentage of funds used for the stated charitable purpose.

Why it matters

  1. Increases transparency for donors. By requiring the display of the percentage of funds actually used for charitable purposes, the bill helps people make more informed decisions about where to donate, reducing the risk of supporting inefficient or deceptive charities.

  2. Encourages accountability among charities. Organizations using unattended donation bins will need to accurately report and potentially improve their operational efficiency, as their financial practices become more visible to the public.

  3. May shift public giving behavior. If people see that only a small percentage of their donations are used for the stated cause, they might choose to donate elsewhere, potentially pressuring charities to maximize the impact of each dollar collected.

  4. Targets common collection points. Since unattended containers (like clothing or donation bins) are widespread and often lack oversight, this law specifically addresses a frequently used but sometimes opaque fundraising method.
