What's happening
This bill creates a congenital heart disease awareness license plate, with proceeds supporting a new fund for related research and education.
Why it matters
Promotes public awareness and visibility of congenital heart disease (CHD). By offering a dedicated license plate, the bill encourages broader recognition and conversation about CHD, potentially reducing stigma and increasing community support for affected individuals and families.
Creates a sustainable funding stream for CHD research and education. The annual service charge attached to the license plate goes directly into a new, dedicated fund, ensuring ongoing resources for investigating the causes, prevention, screening, and treatment of CHD.
Supports state-approved research and education initiatives. Funds are earmarked specifically for projects approved by the New York State Department of Health, targeting scientifically vetted efforts to advance knowledge and improve outcomes related to congenital heart disease.
Enables additional contributions and partnerships. The fund can also receive grants, gifts, and bequests from other sources, amplifying the potential impact and fostering collaboration between the state, private donors, and organizations focused on CHD.
