What's happening
This resolution urges the Governor to proclaim April 2017 as Minority Health Month in New York to raise awareness of minority health disparities.
Why it matters
Highlights persistent health disparities. The resolution underscores that racial and ethnic minorities in New York face higher rates of serious health conditions and mortality, pointing to ongoing inequities that require continued attention and action.
Focuses on systemic solutions. By supporting the work of the Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities Prevention (OMH-HDP), the resolution emphasizes coordinated, statewide efforts—including partnerships with public and private organizations—to address root causes and barriers to health equity.
Calls for increased awareness and action. Urging the Governor to proclaim Minority Health Month is not just ceremonial; it aims to boost public understanding and stimulate local, state, and national initiatives specifically targeting minority health outcomes.
Connects to national efforts. The resolution aligns New York’s observance with National Minority Health Month and its theme of "Accelerating Health Equity," reinforcing the state’s commitment to broader national strategies combating health disparities.
