What's happening
This resolution urges Governor Cuomo to declare April 5, 2017, as Walking Day in New York to promote physical activity.
Why it matters
Addresses a major public health issue. With about 80% of adults not getting enough physical activity, this resolution brings attention to widespread inactivity, which is linked to chronic diseases like heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and certain cancers.
Promotes low-cost, accessible health improvement. By emphasizing walking—a free, easy, and flexible form of exercise—the resolution highlights a practical step everyone can take to improve health regardless of age, income, or location.
Seeks to build lasting healthy habits. The focus is not just on a single day of activity but on encouraging New Yorkers to integrate walking and physical activity into their daily routines for sustained wellness.
Aims to increase public awareness. By urging state-wide participation and official recognition, the resolution hopes to spark greater awareness and cultural change around physical fitness and preventative health.
