What's happening

This resolution honors Amy Hysick for being selected as the 2017 New York State Teacher of the Year.

Why it matters

  1. Highlights the value of innovative, hands-on teaching. Amy Hysick is recognized not just for classroom excellence but for creating engaging, unconventional learning environments (like using reptiles and elaborate classroom decor), showing the impact creative educators can have on student interest and achievement.

  2. Underscores the importance of supporting at-risk students. The resolution points to her leadership in developing teaching strategies for students with diverse learning needs, emphasizing how critical it is to recognize and address educational equity and inclusion.

  3. Showcases educator leadership beyond the classroom. By detailing her participation in district committees, professional associations, and development initiatives, the resolution illustrates how teacher leadership shapes school policy and culture, affecting broader educational outcomes.

  4. Elevates the teaching profession and public perception. By serving as Teacher of the Year, Hysick becomes an ambassador for all New York educators, raising awareness of the challenges and successes in teaching, and providing a visible role model for current and future teachers across the state.
