What's happening

This resolution urges Governor Cuomo to proclaim May 29, 2017, as Hearing Aid Awareness Day in New York State.

Why it matters

  1. Raises attention to the widespread impact of hearing loss. With over 38 million Americans—and globally, 360 million people—affected by hearing loss, this resolution spotlights an often overlooked public health issue that can lead to social isolation, depression, and reduced quality of life.

  2. Highlights the importance and benefits of hearing aids. The resolution emphasizes that hearing aids can significantly improve users' social, psychological, and work-related well-being, yet many people face barriers to access due to high costs.

  3. Draws focus to the need for increased public education and policy action. By urging an official awareness day, the resolution encourages broader conversations about accessibility, affordability, and support for individuals with hearing impairments, potentially influencing future health and education policies.

  4. Connects hearing health to broader disability and veteran issues. Citing data on children with speech or language impairments and veterans returning from war with hearing loss, the resolution underscores the relevance of hearing health across age groups and communities, reinforcing the need for systemic attention.
