What's happening

This resolution honors Sergeant Raymond Owen Bloomfield for receiving the New York State Senate Liberty Medal for his service.

Why it matters

  1. Highlights the importance of recognizing immigrants' contributions. Sergeant Bloomfield was born in Jamaica and immigrated to New York, underlining how immigrant stories are integral to the fabric of American service and achievement.

  2. Draws attention to the long-term commitment and sacrifices of veterans. Bloomfield’s military career spanned multiple conflicts (Vietnam and Gulf War), showing the extended service and adaptability required of reservists and active-duty personnel.

  3. Emphasizes the impact of military service on families. The resolution mentions Bloomfield’s family, recognizing that the support and sacrifices of loved ones are also a vital part of military service.

  4. Reinforces the role of state-level honors in veteran appreciation. By awarding the Liberty Medal, the New York State Senate sets a precedent for state governments to play an active part in honoring and validating the service of veterans beyond federal recognition.
