What's happening
This resolution urges the Governor to proclaim June 15, 2017, as Elder Abuse Awareness Day in New York State.
Why it matters
Raises public and governmental awareness about widespread elder abuse. The resolution highlights that elder abuse is a significant but under-recognized problem, with millions of cases each year and an estimated 85% going unreported, underscoring the need for greater awareness and action.
Addresses the emotional, financial, and physical toll of abuse. By specifying the types of abuse (physical, emotional, financial, neglect, etc.) and their impacts (higher rates of depression, psychological distress, increased mortality risk), the resolution calls attention to the far-reaching consequences for victims and the community.
Encourages reporting and support for victims. The resolution points out that many victims don’t seek legal help due to lack of awareness or support, implying that an official awareness day could empower more elders and their families to recognize and report abuse.
Signals legislative commitment to finding solutions. By referencing ongoing hearings and legislative reviews, the resolution demonstrates that the issue is being actively studied with the aim to improve protections and services for older adults in New York State.
