What's happening

This resolution commemorates the 5th anniversary of New York's Memorial Monument honoring the victims of the 'Comfort Women' system.

Why it matters

  1. Highlights the ongoing relevance of historical atrocities. By commemorating the Comfort Women Memorial, the resolution connects past events of forced military prostitution during WWII to present-day awareness of human trafficking and exploitation, emphasizing that such abuses are not just historical but persist globally.

  2. Strengthens public memory and education. The resolution underscores the role of monuments in educating the public about crimes against humanity, ensuring that the suffering of victims is recognized and remembered within New York and beyond.

  3. Encourages accountability and reconciliation. By referencing U.S. and international calls for acknowledgment and apology from the Japanese government, the resolution reinforces the importance of official recognition and reparations in the healing process for victims and their communities.

  4. Fosters solidarity across communities. Distributing the resolution to Korean American organizations and human rights groups signals an intent to support affected communities, promote multicultural understanding, and encourage collective action against sexual violence and human trafficking.
