What's happening

This resolution urges the Governor to proclaim September 2017 as Sickle Cell Disease Awareness Month in New York State.

Why it matters

  1. Raises the profile of a serious health issue. by urging official recognition of Sickle Cell Disease Awareness Month, the resolution seeks to increase public and governmental attention to a disease that causes significant pain, health complications, and even organ damage, especially affecting African-American and other minority populations.

  2. Highlights the need for early detection and intervention. the resolution notes that universal newborn screening has been in place since 1983, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis and intervention for better outcomes and the need to maintain or enhance these public health efforts.

  3. Underscores health disparities and affected communities. the resolution brings attention to the disproportionate impact of sickle cell disease on African-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, and people from certain other regions, stressing the importance of targeted outreach, education, and support for these populations.

  4. Calls for broader action and awareness. by encouraging activity at local, state, and national levels, the resolution aims to mobilize greater advocacy, funding, and research toward finding better treatments and ultimately a cure, as well as supporting those living with the disease.
