What's happening

This resolution commemorates the 114th anniversary of Panamanian independence from Spain on November 3, 2017.

Why it matters

  1. Acknowledges centuries of colonial and geopolitical significance. The resolution traces Panama's history from indigenous societies through Spanish colonization, the trans-isthmus trade route, and its strategic global importance, highlighting the nation's enduring role in world affairs.

  2. Recognizes complex independence history. By noting both the 1821 liberation from Spain and the subsequent separation from Colombia in 1903, the resolution draws attention to Panama’s layered journey to full sovereignty, which may deepen understanding of its national identity.

  3. Highlights the diaspora’s impact. The resolution explicitly thanks Panamanians living in New York for their contributions, emphasizing the ongoing influence of immigrant communities in shaping state and local culture.

  4. Promotes multicultural awareness. By commemorating an international independence day, the resolution encourages broader recognition of shared histories and the diverse backgrounds that enrich civic life.
