What's happening

This resolution congratulates Emily Lavarnway for winning the 2017 NYSPHSAA Division II Girls Track and Field pentathlon title.

Why it matters

  1. Highlights academic and athletic excellence. The resolution underscores how Emily Lavarnway's achievements go beyond sports, recognizing her advanced coursework and status as a standout scholar, which can inspire other student-athletes to pursue both academics and athletics at a high level.

  2. Emphasizes the value of sportsmanship and character. By noting Lavarnway’s humility, compassion, and respect for others (as well as her Good Sportsmanship Award), the resolution promotes the importance of positive behavior and ethics in competitive environments.

  3. Acknowledges the role of coaching and community support. The resolution credits Coach David Zeitz and the broader community, illustrating how mentorship and encouragement are pivotal in the development of young talent, which may encourage more investment in local youth athletics.

  4. Showcases the impact of female achievement in sports. By detailing Lavarnway’s unique status (such as being the only female to take AP Calculus that year), the resolution highlights and encourages the breaking of gender barriers in both athletics and academics.
