What's happening
This resolution honors Jorge Munoz Zapata for receiving the New York State Senate Liberty Medal for his humanitarian work feeding the hungry.
Why it matters
Spotlights grassroots humanitarian action. By honoring Jorge Munoz Zapata, the resolution draws attention to the impactful work that one individual can do to address hunger and food insecurity at the community level, encouraging others to take similar action.
Reinforces the value of immigrant contributions. Munoz Zapata’s story as a Colombian immigrant who became a U.S. citizen and has significantly contributed to his community emphasizes the positive role immigrants play in strengthening the social fabric of New York and the nation.
Elevates the importance of everyday kindness. The recognition of Munoz Zapata’s daily commitment—using his own salary and resources to feed the hungry—highlights the societal value of consistent, small acts of generosity, not just large or high-profile philanthropic gestures.
Showcases recognition beyond local impact. By referencing Munoz Zapata’s international and national honors, including awards from Colombia and the U.S. President, the resolution underscores how local acts of service can achieve global recognition and inspire broader movements.
