What's happening

This resolution urges Governor Cuomo to declare July 2017 as Boating Safety Awareness Month in New York State.

Why it matters

  1. Highlights growing safety concerns. The resolution draws attention to a rising number of boating-related deaths in New York, underlining a trend that could affect anyone enjoying the state’s waterways, particularly during peak summer months.

  2. Points to gaps in boater education. It emphasizes that many boaters have not taken safety courses, suggesting that current regulations may not go far enough to ensure everyone on the water understands navigation laws and safe practices.

  3. Promotes collective responsibility. By urging statewide awareness and participation, the resolution seeks to foster a culture of safety and shared vigilance, potentially reducing accidents and saving lives.

  4. Uses personal stories to drive policy. The tragic story of Bryan Johnson is cited as a catalyst, making the case for proactive awareness efforts by connecting policy to real-world consequences.
