This resolution urges Governor Cuomo to declare October 15-21, 2017 as New York Rye Week, celebrating rye’s importance to the state.
Why it matters
Highlights rye’s historical and economic significance. The resolution underscores rye’s role as a staple crop in New York for over 300 years, emphasizing its adaptability to the local climate and its continued importance to New York farmers and the state’s agricultural heritage.
Supports local food and beverage industries. By recognizing the recent revival of rye, especially in craft distilling and brewing, the resolution brings attention to the burgeoning Empire Rye whiskey standard and the collaboration among New York distilleries, supporting local businesses and innovation.
Promotes awareness of sustainable farming. The resolution and the events it mentions (like the Wild Rye Rumpus) aim to educate both producers and consumers about sustainable grain cultivation, local sourcing, and the technical challenges and opportunities for rye farmers, fostering a stronger local food system.
Encourages economic development and tourism. By promoting Rye Week and related festivities, the resolution seeks to drive interest in New York’s rye products and industries, potentially boosting tourism and local economies through specialty events and increased demand for regionally produced goods.
