What's happening

This resolution honors Amanda Lloyd, Nathan Tyler, Delaney Ward, and Elizabeth Conners for receiving the New York State Senate Liberty Medal for their heroic lifesaving actions.

Why it matters

  1. Highlights the importance of civilian readiness and training. The resolution notes that two of the honorees were certified lifeguards, emphasizing how lifesaving skills among everyday citizens can make a crucial difference in emergencies.

  2. Spotlights the value of quick, collective action. The group’s coordinated response—some jumping into the water to rescue, another calling 911 and assisting authorities—underlines how teamwork and decisive action can save lives.

  3. Acknowledges personal risk and sacrifice for others. The narrative also honors a bystander (Yvonne E. Kraus) who lost her life while attempting to help, drawing attention to the profound courage and selflessness that can emerge in crisis situations.

  4. Serves as public recognition and encouragement. By bestowing the state's highest civilian honor, the resolution not only celebrates these specific acts of heroism but also encourages a broader culture of civic responsibility and readiness to help in emergencies.
