What's happening

This resolution honors Dena DeFazio for receiving the Robert F. Bensing Award from Prisoners' Legal Services of New York.

Why it matters

  1. Highlights the impact of volunteer legal advocacy. By honoring Dena DeFazio’s work with Prisoners’ Legal Services of New York, the resolution underscores the critical role that volunteer lawyers and law students play in ensuring that incarcerated individuals—especially those who are poor or disadvantaged—have meaningful access to legal representation and justice.

  2. Draws attention to ongoing issues in the prison system. The resolution references the origins of Prisoners’ Legal Services in response to the Attica riot and the persistent lack of prisoner access to courts, reminding readers that systemic barriers to justice in correctional facilities remain an important public concern.

  3. Recognizes intersectionality in public service. Dena DeFazio’s background as both a social worker and legal advocate, as well as her leadership in LGBTQ+ initiatives, showcases the value of multifaceted advocacy—serving diverse, often marginalized, communities both inside and outside the legal system.

  4. Affirms the value of student and early-career contributions. By specifically noting DeFazio's status as a law student and her leadership roles in academic and community organizations, the resolution affirms that impactful contributions to justice and community service are not limited by age or professional rank, and that supporting emerging leaders can have broad societal benefits.
