This resolution honors Vincent J. Cerniglia posthumously with the New York State Senate Liberty Medal for his military and community service.
Why it matters
Recognizes extraordinary military valor. By honoring Vincent J. Cerniglia, the resolution draws public attention to significant acts of heroism during World War II, including participation in the D-Day landings, the Battle of the Bulge, and the liberation of Buchenwald, thereby reinforcing the importance of individual stories in the nation’s collective memory of historic events.
Highlights lifelong public service. Cerniglia’s post-war commitments—as a machinist and engineer, deputy sheriff, founder of the Civil Defense Auxiliary Police, and active member of community organizations—underscore the value of veterans who continue to serve and strengthen their communities after military service.
Signals the ongoing importance of veteran recognition. The resolution serves as a reminder of New York State’s commitment to acknowledging and celebrating veterans, which can inspire further civic engagement and encourage current and future generations to appreciate and support service members and their families.
