What's happening

This resolution urges Governor Cuomo to declare February 21, 2018, as Mother Language Day in New York State.

Why it matters

  1. Celebrating linguistic diversity. The resolution highlights the importance of recognizing and promoting the many languages spoken in New York, which is one of the most linguistically diverse states in the U.S. This emphasis can foster greater respect and inclusion for immigrant and minority communities.

  2. Historical and global context. By connecting Mother Language Day to the 1952 events in Bangladesh and to United Nations initiatives, the resolution frames language rights as a human rights issue and aligns New York with international efforts to protect linguistic heritage.

  3. Encouraging cultural preservation. The resolution draws attention to the role of language in preserving both tangible and intangible cultural heritage, suggesting that supporting mother languages can help maintain traditions and strengthen community bonds within the state.

  4. Promoting social cohesion. By urging awareness and celebration of linguistic diversity, the measure seeks to inspire understanding, tolerance, and dialogue among New Yorkers, which could help reduce social divisions and encourage solidarity across different groups.
