What's happening

This resolution urges Governor Cuomo to proclaim February 21, 2018, as PTA Founders' Day in New York State.

Why it matters

  1. Highlights the long-standing, impactful role of the PTA. The resolution underscores how the PTA has shaped education, health, and child safety policy for over a century, including initiating programs like Kindergarten, school lunches, and school safety reforms.

  2. Recognizes the importance of inclusive advocacy. By noting the 1970 merger of the National PTA with the National Congress of Colored Parents and Teachers, the resolution acknowledges historic efforts to ensure all children and families are represented in educational advocacy.

  3. Celebrates community and volunteer engagement. The measure emphasizes the PTA's function as a network of families, educators, and community leaders, illustrating how grassroots volunteerism can drive public policy and improve quality of life for children statewide.

  4. Affirms the legacy of women-led change. By honoring founders Alice McLellan Birney, Phoebe Apperson Hearst, and Selena Sloan Butler, the resolution brings attention to women's leadership in civic reform and the ongoing importance of individual action in advancing the welfare of children.
