What's happening

This resolution urges the Governor to proclaim May 2018 as Stroke Awareness Month in New York to promote awareness and prevention.

Why it matters

  1. Highlights the high prevalence and impact of stroke. emphasizing that strokes occur frequently (every 40 seconds nationally), affect people of all ages, and are a leading cause of death and long-term disability, including for thousands of New Yorkers each year.

  2. Focuses on preventable harm. underscores that many Americans cannot identify stroke symptoms, and that greater public awareness (like knowing the F.A.S.T. system) could save lives, reduce disabilities, and improve post-stroke outcomes.

  3. Encourages proactive health conversations. by urging New Yorkers to talk to their doctors about stroke prevention and warning signs, the resolution aims to foster earlier interventions and personal responsibility for health.

  4. Draws attention to economic and social costs. points to the billions spent annually on stroke-related care and the lasting effects on survivors and their families, making prevention and awareness a broader public priority.

Cuomo to proclaim May 2018, as Stroke Awareness Month in the State of New York, in conjunction with the observance of National Stroke Awareness Month, and to encourage all New Yorkers to ask their doctors about stroke prevention and the warning signs of stroke; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to The Honorable Andrew M.
