This resolution urges Governor Cuomo to declare April 15-21, 2018 as Osteopathic Medicine Week in New York State.
Why it matters
Highlights the rapid growth and increasing significance of osteopathic medicine. with DOs projected to make up over 20% of U.S. physicians by 2030 and a sharp rise in student enrollment, this resolution underscores the expanding impact of osteopathic practitioners in healthcare.
Emphasizes the unique, holistic approach of DOs. osteopathic physicians are trained to consider the whole person and use hands-on techniques, differentiating their care from other medical professions and potentially appealing to patients seeking comprehensive treatment options.
Draws attention to healthcare access and equity. the resolution notes that DOs often serve in medically underserved rural and urban areas, suggesting that recognizing their contributions could help address provider shortages and healthcare disparities in New York.
Supports local education and workforce development. by spotlighting New York’s two osteopathic medical colleges, the resolution connects state-level recognition to efforts that retain and train primary care providers, which may impact the quality and availability of care statewide.
