What's happening

This resolution honors Lisa McPartland for her advocacy and fundraising for lymphedema awareness, especially on World Lymphedema Day.

Why it matters

  1. Highlights the impact of personal experience in advocacy. By honoring Lisa McPartland, the resolution underscores how individuals affected by medical conditions can drive awareness and policy action, especially when they use their own stories and challenges as motivation.

  2. Raises the profile of lymphedema and related diseases. Public acknowledgment from the legislative body can lead to greater recognition of lymphedema, a frequently misunderstood condition, potentially inspiring more research funding, better medical training, and improved support for patients.

  3. Encourages community engagement and innovative fundraising. The resolution details creative advocacy efforts—such as forgoing wedding gifts for donations and lighting public landmarks—that can serve as models for others seeking to support health-related causes or organize impactful community events.

  4. Signals the legislature’s support for patient advocacy organizations. By recognizing the Lymphatic Education & Research Network and McPartland’s leadership role, the resolution may strengthen the credibility and influence of advocacy groups pushing for policy change and increased resources.
