What's happening

This resolution urges the Governor to declare March 4-10, 2018, as Consumer Protection Week in New York State.

Why it matters

  1. Raises awareness of consumer risks. By urging an official week of recognition, the resolution spotlights ongoing dangers like identity theft, online scams, and deceptive telemarketing, highlighting how these threats remain relevant for New Yorkers.

  2. Promotes consumer education. The initiative encourages state-level participation in nationwide efforts to teach residents about their rights, safe financial practices, and resources available to protect themselves, which is especially important given the scale of fraud and theft affecting millions.

  3. Strengthens collaboration with national campaigns. Aligning New York’s efforts with the Federal Trade Commission and other organizations not only amplifies the message but also ensures that residents have access to up-to-date, authoritative information and events tailored to current consumer protection challenges.

  4. Demonstrates legislative support for consumer advocacy. The resolution signals that the state government values and prioritizes consumer protection, potentially paving the way for stronger future actions, more resources, or policy changes to safeguard the public.
