What's happening

This resolution commends Chief Warrant Officer 5 Michael Johnson on his retirement after 24 years of service in the New York Army National Guard.

Why it matters

  1. Highlights the broad scope of military and humanitarian service. Chief Warrant Officer 5 Michael Johnson’s career included not only combat deployments (Iraq, Grenada, Bosnia, Panama, etc.) but also disaster response, such as aiding victims of Hurricane Katrina, Irene, and Superstorm Sandy, demonstrating the diverse roles the National Guard plays in both war and domestic emergencies.

  2. Showcases leadership and technical skill development. Johnson served as both an instructor and maintenance test pilot, as well as piloting multiple aircraft types. This indicates a high level of expertise and leadership within military aviation, underscoring the importance of ongoing skill development and mentorship in the armed forces.

  3. Emphasizes the value placed on military service and recognition. The resolution details numerous awards and decorations received, reaffirming how states and communities honor military personnel for their service and sacrifice, which in turn can strengthen public support for veterans and military families.

  4. Reinforces the connection between military service and community resilience. By highlighting Johnson’s contributions during domestic disasters, the resolution illustrates how National Guard members play a critical role in supporting and protecting local communities, not just serving on overseas missions.
