What's happening

This resolution recognizes April 8-14, 2018, as National Library Week in New York, celebrating the vital role of libraries.

Why it matters

  1. Highlights the evolving role of libraries. This resolution underscores how libraries have transformed from book-lending spaces into vital community centers that offer technological resources, skill-building opportunities, and collaborative environments.

  2. Emphasizes social and economic impact. Libraries are recognized for supporting diverse groups—like students, small business owners, and English-language learners—by providing access to resources that can improve education, income, health, and overall quality of life.

  3. Affirms broad community reach in New York. With over 755 public libraries and 1,100 branches statewide, the resolution spotlights the widespread, direct impact libraries have on individuals across New York, justifying statewide recognition.

  4. Connects to national recognition and diversity. By noting the involvement of Misty Copeland as honorary chair and celebrating the theme “Libraries Lead,” the resolution links local efforts to national movements that value diversity, leadership, and lifelong learning.
