What's happening

This resolution commends Janus Adams for receiving an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from SUNY New Paltz on May 19, 2018.

Why it matters

  1. Highlights the societal value of recognizing diverse achievements. By honoring Janus Adams—a Black woman who has excelled in journalism, history, and the arts—the resolution underscores the importance of celebrating individuals from underrepresented backgrounds whose work advances social justice, education, and cultural understanding.

  2. Affirms the role of educational institutions in acknowledging non-traditional contributions. Granting an honorary doctorate to a graduate who broke new ground (including earning the first graduate degree in Black Studies in the U.S.) signals SUNY New Paltz's commitment to valuing both academic and real-world leadership.

  3. Spotlights sustained community impact and public engagement. Adams’ multi-decade career in media, education, and activism demonstrates how broad, long-term service—spanning NPR, national publications, and advocacy—can shape public discourse, empower marginalized communities, and inspire future generations.
