What's happening

This resolution urges the Governor to proclaim April 2018 as Jazz Appreciation Month in New York, celebrating jazz's cultural impact.

Why it matters

  1. Recognizes New York’s central role in jazz history. The resolution highlights that many iconic jazz musicians and composers—such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and Duke Ellington—have roots in New York, underlining the state’s unique contribution to this distinctly American art form.

  2. Promotes engagement and participation in jazz culture. By encouraging New Yorkers to listen to jazz in clubs, on the air, and participate in local jazz events, the resolution aims to foster community engagement and continued appreciation of jazz’s evolving styles and cultural significance.

  3. Emphasizes the diversity and innovation within jazz. The resolution notes the rich variety of jazz styles—ranging from Dixieland and swing to hip-hop jazz fusions—demonstrating how jazz has been both a reflection of and a catalyst for cultural diversity and creativity in New York and beyond.

  4. Affirms the importance of cultural heritage preservation. By officially recognizing Jazz Appreciation Month, the resolution not only celebrates the past and present contributions of jazz musicians but also reinforces the value of cultural preservation and education for future generations.
