What's happening

This resolution urges Governor Cuomo to proclaim April 17, 2018, as Ellis Island Family History Day in New York State.

Why it matters

  1. Highlights New York’s role in U.S. immigration history. By urging recognition of Ellis Island Family History Day, the resolution draws attention to the state's pivotal place in the stories of millions of immigrant families, emphasizing how New York has shaped—and been shaped by—waves of newcomers.

  2. Encourages reflection on personal and collective heritage. The resolution seeks to inspire New Yorkers to explore and appreciate their own family histories, fostering a sense of connection to past generations and the broader narrative of American immigration.

  3. Aims to boost public awareness and education. By designating a specific day for this observance, the measure promotes historical awareness at local and state levels, encouraging schools, communities, and organizations to educate residents about the significance of Ellis Island and the immigrant experience.
