What's happening

This resolution urges Governor Cuomo to proclaim April 2018 as Minority Health Month in New York to raise awareness of health disparities affecting minority communities.

Why it matters

  1. Highlights persistent health disparities. The resolution draws attention to the ongoing, well-documented differences in health outcomes for minority groups in New York—such as higher rates of chronic diseases and premature death—underscoring the need for continued focus and targeted action.

  2. Supports existing state initiatives. By referencing the Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities Prevention (OMH-HDP), the resolution reinforces the importance of state-level programs aimed at eliminating these disparities and improving access to health resources for minority communities.

  3. Promotes community partnerships. The resolution emphasizes the value of collaboration between public agencies, private organizations, and local communities to develop more effective, coordinated approaches to addressing health inequities.

  4. Encourages broader public engagement. By urging a statewide proclamation, the resolution aims to raise awareness among policymakers, healthcare providers, and the general public, potentially generating increased support and resources for minority health issues.

Cuomo to proclaim April 2018, as Minority Health Month in the State of New York; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to The Honorable Andrew M.
