This resolution urges Governor Cuomo to proclaim April 4, 2018, as Walking Day in New York alongside National Walking Day.
Why it matters
Promotes public health awareness. By urging a statewide Walking Day, the resolution aims to draw attention to the importance of physical activity, potentially motivating residents to adopt healthier habits that could help counteract widespread inactivity.
Highlights preventable health risks. The resolution underscores that a lack of physical activity is linked to serious health conditions (like heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers), making the issue relevant to anyone concerned about personal or community health outcomes.
Encourages accessible, low-barrier exercise. Emphasizing walking as “fun, free, easy, social and great exercise” positions it as an inclusive activity, removing common barriers to participation and making it an attainable first step for many toward a healthier lifestyle.
Leverages state leadership for broader impact. By involving the Governor and aligning with National Walking Day, the resolution seeks to amplify its message, potentially encouraging more widespread participation and fostering a culture of wellness across New York.
