What's happening

This resolution celebrates the Third Annual POWER ON THE RISE Brunch hosted by the Flatbush Tenant Coalition on April 21, 2018.

Why it matters

  1. Highlights the significance of tenant organizing. By recognizing the Flatbush Tenant Coalition and its parent, the Flatbush Development Corporation, the resolution underscores the vital role tenant organizations play in advocating for safe, healthy housing and improved neighborhood conditions.

  2. Emphasizes community empowerment and recognition. The resolution draws attention to efforts that unite residents, foster community pride, and acknowledge the contributions and sacrifices of tenant leaders, including memorializing those who have passed.

  3. Raises awareness of housing and social justice issues. Celebrating this event at the state level signals legislative support for grassroots groups working on housing rights, tenant education, and broader neighborhood stability, potentially encouraging similar initiatives elsewhere.

  4. Affirms the diversity and needs of urban communities. By outlining the FDC’s multifaceted approach—including programs for economic development, youth, and immigrants—the resolution highlights the importance of addressing the varied needs of a diverse population in urban policy and community development.
