What's happening

This resolution commemorates the 35th anniversary of the Wallkill Valley Times and honors its contributions to local journalism.

Why it matters

  1. Highlights the evolution of local journalism technology. the resolution traces how the Wallkill Valley Times adopted industry innovations like desktop publishing and electronic pagination, showing how small-town papers have adapted to broader industry shifts that impact how communities access information.

  2. Recognizes the role of local newspapers in community identity. the paper is celebrated not just for reporting news, but for chronicling hometown life, promoting local businesses, and covering issues directly affecting daily lives, underscoring how such publications foster civic engagement and local culture.

  3. Acknowledges the significance of independent and family-run media. by spotlighting the paper's founding, growth, and ongoing leadership by its original editor, the resolution emphasizes the value of independent local journalism at a time when many such outlets are struggling or closing.

  4. Serves as a statement on the importance of a free press for democracy. the resolution explicitly links informed citizenry and healthy democracy to the continued vitality of local newspapers, making a broader case for public and legislative support of community journalism.
