What's happening

This resolution commemorates the 40th anniversary of the Food Stamp Act of 1977, recognizing its impact on food assistance.

Why it matters

  1. Highlights the longstanding impact of federal food assistance. By commemorating the Food Stamp Act of 1977, the resolution draws attention to how national standards for food aid have improved access for vulnerable populations over four decades.

  2. Raises awareness of current and future challenges. The resolution’s mention of reviewing ongoing legislative and administrative pressures acknowledges that food security programs face real threats and must adapt to changes in federal policy.

  3. Encourages continued community partnerships. The focus on collaboration between local agencies and community partners signals the importance of local action and innovation in filling gaps and ensuring ongoing support for those experiencing food insecurity.

  4. Promotes public recognition of anti-hunger efforts. By celebrating this anniversary, the resolution aims to keep food insecurity and the importance of assistance programs like SNAP in the public conversation, reinforcing their legitimacy and value in society.
