What's happening

This resolution urges the Governor to declare July 2018 as Fibroid Awareness Month in New York to promote uterine fibroid education and awareness.

Why it matters

  1. Raises awareness of a common but often overlooked women’s health issue. Uterine fibroids are the most prevalent benign tumors affecting the uterus and the leading cause of hysterectomies, impacting many women’s health, fertility, and quality of life.

  2. Highlights disproportionate impact on African American women. The resolution draws attention to significant health disparities, as African American women experience fibroids at about three times the rate of the general population, underscoring the need for targeted outreach and equity in healthcare.

  3. Addresses substantial economic and societal costs. The bill notes the massive financial burden caused by fibroids, including billions spent on healthcare and lost productivity due to missed work and disability, signaling the broader economic impact beyond individual patients.

  4. Encourages investment in education, research, and support. By urging the creation of seminars, informational panels, and community programs, the resolution seeks to foster earlier diagnosis, better treatments, and progress toward a cure, potentially reducing suffering and healthcare costs statewide.

17.2 billion estimated annual lost work costs in terms of absenteeism and short term disability in women ages 25 to 54; and WHEREAS, The establishment of health seminars, funding opportunities, medical information panels, and community programs would empower and inform residents of the State of New York about uterine fibroids and would encourage earlier diagnosis, more research, better treatment options, and eventually a cure for uterine fibroids; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim July 2018, as Fibroid Awareness Month in the State of New York, fully confident that this recognition will emanate the journey to fostering appropriate measures to battle this disadvantageous disease; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to The Honorable Andrew M.
