This resolution urges the Governor to declare May 2018 as Arthritis Awareness Month in New York, promoting education and awareness.
Why it matters
Raises public awareness of a highly prevalent and disabling condition. The resolution highlights that nearly a quarter of New York adults and millions nationwide are affected by arthritis, underlining the importance of public education to reduce stigma, encourage early diagnosis, and promote better management.
Draws attention to the economic and social impact of arthritis. With arthritis being a leading cause of disability and costing the nation $128 billion annually, the resolution underscores the broader implications for workforce participation, healthcare spending, and quality of life for patients and their families.
Emphasizes the need for research and better treatment. By spotlighting the mission of organizations like the Arthritis National Research Foundation and the Arthritis Foundation, the resolution advocates for ongoing research, improved treatments, and resources to support those living with arthritis, including children and veterans.
Encourages proactive community and policy engagement. The resolution’s call for a statewide awareness month aims to mobilize citizens, healthcare providers, and policymakers to focus on prevention, early intervention, and support services, potentially influencing future public health initiatives and funding priorities.
